Ayurveda is a holistic science originating from India and dating back more than 5000 years. The specific definition of "Ayur" means life and "Ved" means knowledge. Ayurveda encompasses the knowledge and treatment geared towards longevity, which offers healing, rejuvenation, and self realization therapies using various methods including herbs,diet,exercise,yoga,massage,aromas,tantras,mantras and meditation.
According to Ayurvedic tradition, health is the balance of elements air, earth, fire and water. According to this tradition, illness is an excess of an element. In identifying one can optimize health by identifying themselves in accordance to three basic body types, including; Vata (thin), Pitta (muscular), and Kapha (fat). These three types have a great influence on a person's health and wellness (as do genetic, seasonal and electrical factors). Often by checking pulse and areas of the tongue, Ayurvedic practitioners can correlate conditions of specific organs.
Aurvedic method of treatment of illness is "source focused" rather than at the level of symptoms (as is typical of the west), believing that an individual can take responsibility for their health.
