trends + business + politics: Target Hits the Mark With Green Packaging Policies

Hats off to our friends at Target who recently started implementing environmentally conscious policies on packaging. The giant has switched to cardboard versus plastics packaging on hundreds of items, including the popular iPod carrying cases.

The initiative started a year and a half ago when the organization convinced its seven private label packaging companies to do away with excess packaging. This one move impacted some 500 items sold. For some perspective on the environmental impact of their realigned policies, when Target asked its packaging vendor to do away with clam shells and replace them with cardboard packaging with a small plastic window, this one move prevented an estimated 5000 pounds of PVC from entering landfills each year.
