Sri Lankan Mountan Oasis for the Spiritual Traveller

--WEEKEND ARCHIVE FEATURE: fashion + travel + music--

Looking for an escape? Ready to truly unplug? Look no further than the destination that Vogue calls " a spiritual high" and the Observer referred to as "the best yoga retreat in the the world." Welcome to Ulpotha.

Ulpotha is a working village nestled into the mountains of Sri Lanka. The oasis is surrounded by a lotus ringed lake and paddy fields, and seems lost in a time long forgotten; one defined by a simple quieter and truly sustainable way of life. For a few select weeks out of the year, the agricultural village opens its door to a few handful of guests from around the world to introduce them to another way of life, and a spiritual "reconnection." The village stay offers an array of Ayurvedic treatment by Dr, Srilal Mudunkothge, an acclaimed practitioner of Ayurveda, and Yoga classes are available throughout the stay led by world renowned yoga instructors.

Your stay is in little adobe houses that are situated in a clearing surrounded by tropical trees and shrubs. The sandy paths surrounding the houses are shaded by coconut palms and fringed with brilliant hibiscus and the vegetable plots filled with bright sunflowers and marigolds. It is truly the oasis of your dreams.

Main meals are eaten in a white Sri Lankan manor house with antique furnishings and art (so stunning that it was featured in "The World of Interiors). The rest of the delicious and healthy meals are eaten in an "ambalama" - a large open room with a roof supported by pillars. Food is laid out for you and you eat as you please.

The entire experience is extraordinary and is all inclusive from the moment you arrive. Rates are affordable, and the village is less than a three hour drive from the airport.
