Greenest City on Earth Starts Construction in 08'

--art + architecture + design--

Welcome to Masdar City, the world’s greenest city set to begin construction in Abu Dhabi in early 2008. The project which is being designed by Foster and Associates, and driven by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, is expected to span six million square meters and be inhabited by an estimated 50,000 people. Some of the incredible sustainability initiatives of what is being coined as a zero-carbon, zero-waste, and car free city include;

-All city electricity generated by a photovoltaic panel system
-Water provided through a solar-powered desalination plant.
- Landscaping within the city, and crops grown outside the city, will be irrigated with grey water, as well as treated waste water produced by the city.

Dr. Sultan al Jaber, CEO of the Masdar Initiative, said,
Masdar City will question conventional patterns of urban development, and set new benchmarks for sustainability and environmentally friendly design – the students, faculty and businesses located in Masdar City will not only be able to witness innovation first-hand, but they will also participate in its development.”
A model of the Masdar City will be unveiled on January 21, at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi.
