Sigmund Freud, the founder of psychoanalysis, changed the understanding of the human mind. His findings had not only impacted the field of mental health, but also public relations, marketing, advertising and ultimately helped industry understand how to tap products "into the human psyche." The knowledge of how the mind works was then used by politicians to influence public perception. The result ultimately is the very engineering of public consent in the last century.
Here is the remarkable documentary " The Century of Self" by Adam Curtis, produced in 2002. The award winning BBC film presents the complicated and controversial history behind "engineering consent."
