BBC Launches New Eco Fashion Magazine
Supporting "Fashion Without Victim"

--fashion + travel + music--

There is no doubt that Eco-Fashion has been riding on a major trend wave for the last year. Those who are more married to the Eco part of Eco-Fashion are all keeping fingers and toes crossed that the fascination is less trend and more evolution in consumer culture. A new online magazine backed by a very large and reputable player makes us think that Eco-Fashion just might be here to stay.

The magazine is called "Thread" and is backed by none other than BBC and fashion designer Katherine Hamnett. The online site touts a catchy tag line "Fashion Without Victim" and features colorful if hard to navigate images and feature stories. The site is positioning itself to "cut the heat of ethical fashion" and aspires to cover a range of issues from the environmental footprint of clothing manufacturing, to the impact of the fashion industry on human and animal rights and why the choices consumers make as clothes shoppers make a real difference. One thing is for sure, the folks behind the new endeavor understand the need for more information on the origins of Eco-Fashion, and are clearly hoping to educate the green fashionista on subjects beyond next seasons fashion picks.

Thread magazine will launch on 22 April 2008 in conjunction with a new four-part series on BBC Three. In ‘Blood, Sweat And T-Shirts’, six young fashion lovers will swap shopping for the factories and back streets of India to make clothes for the British High Street, offering a unique insight into how our clothes are made. The magazine will be supported by BBC channel BBC Three, BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra, BBC Asian Network and BBC 6 Music and on bb.co.uk/blast.

French Parliment's "Body Image Battle" With The Fashion World

--.op-Ed--

French fashion insiders are in an uproar over recent news of the French parliament's lower house decision to adopt a groundbreaking bill that would make it illegal for anyone - including fashion magazines, advertisers and Web sites - to publicly incite extreme thinness.

The National Assembly approved the bill in a series of votes after the legislation won unanimous support from the ruling conservative UMP party. It goes to the Senate in the coming weeks.. The decision has caused a rift in Paris between an industry banking on a particular vision of beauty to sell millions in clothes and a government that is concerned by the growing number of anorexics in France, now estimated between 30,000-40,000 French women (French Health Ministry).

Conservative lawmaker Valery Boyer, author of the law, argued that encouraging anorexia or severe weight loss should be punishable in court. In an Associated Press interview just before the parliamentary session, Boyer said "It would give judges the power to imprison and fine offenders up to $47,000 if found guilty of "inciting others to deprive themselves of food" to an "excessive" degree." But fashion insiders pushed back.

Didier Grumbach, president of the influential French Federation of Couture, replied to the decision, "Never will we accept in our profession that a judge decides if a young girl is skinny or not skinny," he said. "That doesn't exist in the world, and it will certainly not exist in France."

But is the problem really the clothes, the models or the industry, or the consumer who buys into it hook, bait and sinker? I mean American late night TV tries to sell us on overnight millionaire schemes as McDonalds tempts us with hormone laden Big Macs - isn't it up to us to decide if buy into either proposition ? Fashion insiders would certainly like us to believe that.

But let's get real, shall we. The issue of selling beauty and sex appeal is unfortunately far more complex and entangled in issues of power, self worth and social status. No one feels more valuable eating a a burger and fries. Size zero eighteen year olds are selling more than underpants, they are selling you on a dream of a perfect life that starts with a perfect bust line. It is the promise of "making it, "being it, " and "having it" all. The mainstream has so bought into the idea of appearance as social currency that it has become globally bankable; causing industry uproars and parliamentary decisions. They sell the dream that we buy into, even if it realistically lets us down every time. We know we will never be or have that girl on the billboard, but buying a piece of whatever she represents, brings us that much closer to the dream. We sip from this "kool aid" in pretty crystal champagne glasses revelling in the delusion. Yes, we are very much to blame.

But beyond the issue of the consumer, consumer psychology or the obvious consumer responsibility in the matter, is the question of weather there needs to be any regulation in terms of what images and ideas we sell to the public. The question is, does government have a right to regulate what is an acceptable message to send to the public ? The answer to that is simply - yes. In the U.S we can't advertise guns, we can't advertise cigarettes on TV (and need to include health risks in all other advertising), and as of late we can't advertise sugary cereals to kids. The government, in cases with serious risks to the population, steps in and weighs in. The fashion industry's claim that "too skinny" is a subjective idea, makes as much sense as the subjectivity of something having too much sugar or not - - yes, if need be, we can actually measure both in grams.

Here's the thing Mr. Grumbach, the world actually does decide if a girl is too skinny or not. Millions of girls actually even decide for themselves - even those that are a size zero who still decide they are too fat. They, like millions of others who may not fall prey to illness as a result, fill their inner "personal value void" with aspirations to what you are selling. No you as an industry are not blame for our spiritual vacancies that allow for this to happen, but you are to blame as the "dealer" of this "fix." And yes, a judge can decide if a girl is skinny or not, I personally think they have had far more complex matters to resolve than the subjectivity of a waist line.

Good going France...another reason to love you, beyond the good cheese and wine !

Defining the $520 Billion Buying Power Fueling Eco-Fashion

--fashion + travel + music--

Remember days when being trendy meant wearing black rubber bracelets by the dozen ala Madonna or sporting grunge as an ode to Nirvana. Long gone are days where trend and fashion are defined by pop culture, as "green" culture has taken hold. These days being at the edge of style means being conscious not only of the color and lines of your designer picks, but also of the origins of the fabrics and the practices of the company manufacturing them. Looking "hot" means being smart in 2008.

According to a new report from Media Post, the GenY and Millenials generation now represent a whopping $520 billion in buying power and are increasingly including clothing in the organic purchases.

"Gen Y and the Millennials are really driving this trend," says Barbie M. Casasus, senior director and consumer strategist at Iconoculture, based in Minneapolis, adding that 20- to-28-year-olds represent about $520 billion in buying power and say they are willing to pay more for organic and fair-trade products. "And they're pretty passionate about it. While it's a category that is still in its infancy, the demand is growing."

Iconculture has defined four shopping segments for the conscious consumer going green, including; the "living green consumer" who embraces the whole environmental lifestyle, the "core fashionista" who buys to be at the edge of fashion and sees her style as a way to define her power, the "walking green consumer" who is buying to belong to a community, and the "spending green consumer" who sees buying green as a symbol of luxury and status.

Companies are building significant business' by focusing on the green culture. Brands such as Nau and Indigenous Designs have gone after these consumers and have successfully reached them. Now big household name brands such as Perry Ellis and American Apparel are heading into the market with their own fair trade and organic lines.

“Even mainstream retailers are weaving green into their overall merchandise,” David Wigder, SVP of Digitas and author of Marketing Green, says. “Moreover, as their cost drops over time, more sustainable fabrics will naturally be included in mainstream clothing.”

This is all good news for consumers. As more players enter the field, competition will help bring prices down as well as provide more breadth of product in more locations. Who would have thought that the generation that bought into slacking, grunge and heroine chic marketing (remember that) would be fueling an industry based on mindfulness, wellness and accountability. Ha...and they said we didn't care :)!

The Sound of Culture Fusion:
Jewish Reggae Artist Matisyahu

--fashion + travel + music--

As we have moved increasingly towards a multi-cultural existence, it is inspiring to see an artist of the caliber of Matisyahu, whose talent is unquestionable and whose approach brilliantly embodies the cultural fusion that is so in spirit with the time.

The artist is a Hasidic Jew straight out of Crown Heights Brooklyn and is shaking up the music scene with his innovative mixes of English, Yiddish and Hebrew lyrics that are delivered with pulsating rap/reggae rhythms that are so incredibly good that he is getting serious nods from fellow rappers. Matisyahu albums "Youth" (released in 2006) and "Matisyahu Live at Stubbs" (released in 2005), were both received to rave reviews. Both offer a unique and utterly enthralling listening experience (available on Amazon.com).

Here is a sample of his fantastic hit "Jerusalem." Check out his site for concert and appearance dates!

Handbags For A Healthy Planet

--fashion + travel + music--

Every fashionista probably thinks a good handbag can cure a whole lot of problems...perhaps not global - but at least personal (nothing like a little retail therapy - right?!). But now that sentiment can actually be put to good use, through the good work of Montreal based Eco-Handbags.

The online retailer sells from the chicest to the wildest handbag creations all from recycled materials. Looking at the selection, one is stunned by both the variety of styles and the variety of products that lent themselves to the production of these bags. From denim jean, to chopsticks to inner tubes and 35 mm slides - nothing is without fashion potential in the eyes of the designers using recycled materials. Prices are as reasonable as the handbags are cool. It's never been easier to do well by the planet...while looking fabulous.

Vivienne Westwood Unveils Eco-Inspired Collection at Paris Fashion Week, With Help of Primary School Students

--fashion + travel + music--

Always outrageous and pushing the limits in the fashion world, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood unveiled her autumn-winter ready to wear show in Paris this past Monday with Eco inspired painting throughout the collection. Beyond the innovative theme was work of a team of truly "fresh thinkers" - seven and eight year old primary school student from a school in Nottingham U.K.

The designer received photos from the students after submitting a brief to the class asking the student to imagine soldiers who had been fighting in the jungle and when the war was over, they had so fallen in love with nature that they did not want to go back to the city. The designer was so impressed with the results that she enlisted the team of creative kids as collaborators in an "Eco-Warrior" themed collection called "Chaos Point."

Here is a sneak peak of the show, courtesy of AP.

Five Star Rejuvenation in the Glorious Austrian Alps

Driving through the vast Austrian Alps is like falling into a sort of "soul warp," you simply are not the same. You breath deeper, think slower, and seem to spiritually somehow "exhale." Endless miles of scenic drives with seemingly infinite beautiful vistas delight the senses and promise a unique escape in nearly every season of the year. Kitzbuhel, a small Alpine town in the Tyrol region, outshines the dozens of other splendid contenders of the area. The town, nestled in the mountains, has remained a favorite for both locals and the European jet set for over half a century. Today it is a go-to spot for those seeking to rejuvenate and re-energize.

Kitzbuhel is located about 95 km from Innsbruck, 80km from Salzburg and about 120 km from Munich, and is a popular vacation spot for nearby Austrians, Germans, and Italians . The town, has been an on again, off again hot-spot since before the second world war and in the last few years has seen a development boom and a tourism boom that the approximately 10,000 locals seem to be both celebrating (and sometimes, cursing). What makes Kitzbuhel so unique is a combination of year round sports and wellness activities, world class cuisine at any number of restaurants and hotels in the area, abundant natural habitats to explore, as well as within a few hours drive glorious cities such as Vienna or a days ride to any number of beautiful Italian cities including Venice.

The year round sports include skiing and snowboarding at the world renowned Hahnenkamm, golfing at any one of the four nearby gold courses, cycling and mountain biking, tennis at the local tennis hall (or on one of the thirty one outdoor tennis courts), and much more. For those seeking healing and wellness of the mind, body and soul, Kitzbuhel offers first class treatments at several local destinations including the 5 star A-Rosa Hotel Spa (although nearly every major hotel in the area offers such services). The small town is a tiny jewel amongst the towering Alps and a must see on your next European bound adventure.
